In a world where medicine often stops at treating symptoms, HANDICAP LAB has set out as a “think tank” to break the status quo. Our focus is not on lifelong management of rare pediatric diseases, but on their CURE. We believe that every child deserves a future without the shackles of a chronic diagnosis. As a pediatric “Think-TANK” group, we bring together the brightest minds in genetics, biotechnology, and clinical practice to explore new paths of curing options in rare genetic diseases in childhood. For us, "incurable" is not an endpoint, but a challenge that we take on with bold science and unwavering focus. When we look at all these serious pediatric diseases, industry and biotechnological companies focus on developing treatment options, often very expensive for the health care systems, to “treat” a child over many years, sometimes decades. HANDICAP LAB was founded in 2026 to focus on “curing” options. Curing means, focussing on gene therapy options to repair the defects on DNA/RNA level as early as possible. As early as possible means, most of these genetic defects are present in pregnancy, nobody realizes it, the child becomes ill in utero without treatment. To date, treatment will be introduced often many months after delivery later, sometimes years. A focus must be, introducing a screening method of prenatal whole genome sequencing for each unborn baby.
